Investigator (Level 5)– [Kingston- 5 posts] [Montego Bay- 2 posts] salary: $5,198,035

Job Purpose

 Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, the Investigator is responsible:

  • To protect Jamaican society by investigating customs offences to the point where they can be successfully prosecuted through the courts if appropriate.
  • To create and maintain an effective deterrent against persons committing customs offences, thereby optimising revenue collected and protecting the borders.

Key Responsibilities

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations of persons and entities suspected of involvement in customs offences.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into individuals and organisations who are suspected of engaging in activities such as money laundering and trade-based money laundering.
  • Conduct interviews with suspects, witnesses, and others to aid investigations.
  • Examine documents and other items to aid investigations being carried out.
  • Properly secure evidence of offences.
  • Cooperate with other Jamaican and international law enforcement agencies in the conduct of investigations.
  • Manage investigations to enable the successful prosecution of cases through the courts (if appropriate).
  • Participate in court proceedings where required.
  • Collaborate with team members to enhance case completion and capacity building.

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Maintain customer service principles, standards, and measurements.
  • Identify and incorporate the interests and needs of customers in business process design.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs all other duties and functions as may be incidental or related to the functions and responsibilities of the job.
  • May be required to provide witness statements, attend court proceedings, and give evidence.
  • Comply with Health & Safety Policies & Procedures.

 

 

Required Competencies

 Technical

  • Data Analysis and data analytics techniques.
  • Good understanding of customs policies, procedures and controls.
  • Knowledge and understanding of investigative best practices.
  • Good understanding of criminal law and the criminal justice system in Jamaica.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer (assisted) auditing techniques, investigations, law enforcement, intelligence, law, data analytics, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Experience in conducting investigations.
  • At least three (3) years related experience.

Special Conditions Associated with The Job

  • Work will be conducted in offices with standard equipment and specialised software.
  • Involves working in a fast-paced environment with ongoing interactions with critical stakeholders.
  • On-call 24 hours a day.
  • A high degree of travel may be required.
  • May be required to carry lethal and non-lethal weapons such as firearms and exposed to significant threats to personal safety because of involvement in contraband and anti-corruption operations.
  • May be required to attend court proceedings.
  • May be required to work flexi-hours.
